AVSI is active in 42 countries throughout Africa, Latin America, Eastern Europe, the Middle East, and Asia in the areas of health and sanitation, child care, education, vocational training, upgrading of urban areas, agriculture and food security, ICT, and emergency relief.
AVSI promotes cultural, social and economical development according to the Catholic Social Teaching, especially among the most disadvantaged in the developing nations and countries. AVSI acts as an international network linking 27 associated NGOs, most of which are based in non-Western countries.
AVSI Canada’s current countries of focus include Haiti and Brazil.
AVSI is recognized as a NGO for international cooperation by the Italian Government and the European Union, and is registered as a Private and Voluntary Organization (PVO) with USAID (No 10013, July 22 1991), a registered Charity in Canada, and holds General Consultative status with the UN Economic and Social Council (ECOSOC) and the UN Children’s Fund (UNICEF) in New York, and the UN Industrial Development Organization (UNIDO) in Vienna. AVSI is recognized on the NGOs Special List of the International Labor Organization (ILO) in Geneva.
