AVSI Foundation is an international non – profit organization founded in Italy in 1972. At present AVSI operates in 39 countries of the world with more than 100 development co-operation projects in Africa, Latin America and Caribbean, Eastern Europe, the Middle East and Asia.
AVSI operates in the area of education, health and sanitation, care of children in difficult conditions, education, vocational training, upgrading of informal urban areas, agriculture, environment, promotion of small businesses, food security, ICT, and emergency relief.
AVSI mission is to support human development in developing countries with special attention to education and the promotion of the dignity of each person in all its expressions, according to Catholic social teaching.
At the present moment the projects involve 124 professional personnel such as doctors, engineers, agriculturalists and educationalists. They work on specific assignments for an average of two years in conjunction with local qualified staff, which now number over 1000.
AVSI largest backers are the European Union, UN Agencies, the Italian Government, local administrations and bodies, private businesses and individuals.
Since 1973, AVSI is recognized as an NGO for international cooperation by the Italian Government; it is registered asa private and voluntary organization (PVO) with USAID (No 10013, July 22 1991); it holds General Consultative status with the UN Economic and Social Council (ECOSOC) in New York, the UN Industrial Development Organization (UNIDO) in Vienna and the UN Fund for Children (UNICEF) in New York, and is recognized on the NGOs Special List of the International Labor Organization (ILO) in Geneva.
AVSI has adopted a Quality Management System in the area of Project Planning according to ISO 9001:2000 standards.
AVSI Foundation is a member of CDO Opere Sociali, a federation associated with over 1.000 not-for-profit bodies. Such membership provides AVSI more opportunities to improve its know-how in project implementation and to extend its network of local partners in the various countries of activity.
Since 2006 the Fondazione per la SussidiarietÃ has been AVSI cultural and scientific partner, to help the elaboration of the anthropological and themes, and the understanding of socio-economics phenomena, based on the centrality of the person and the value of the common good.
